Molding To The Environment

As my first 'real' installation comes to a steady finish, I have experienced many firsts as a creator. Throughout this process I have pondered which title I fall under, a designer or an artist? I concluded that I, am in fact, both. I have come to realize that conceptual design is, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating aspects in the entire process of creating - from it's initial start to the day in which the piece is presented -

This particular piece has made me obsessively aware of my surroundings, not just when I am creating, but when I am rummaging through my daily life. I have become oddly calm, a bit more patient & extremely aware of where I am relative to what is in my immediate environment. My thoughts are constantly recycling with, why am I here, what is my relationship with these objects that are presented around me - which usually drifts my thoughts into a deeper ponder of the things, people, sounds, plants, and smells that my life was meant to experience.
This project that I am closing a chapter on, was meant to reflect the environment that the benches are going to be installed in. I conceptualized them to be complimenting the immediate environment while not forgetting about everything that is bigger than the relatively microscopic life in the macroscopic view of the world. Everything around us was created for a reason, placed in their environment and are expected to join together to function as a unified humanity. The scope of my thoughts are much larger than these tables, but in the process of attempting to understand and conceptualize the "bigger" picture, my thoughts always revert back to the simplicity of it all: there is the micro and there is the macro. Everything stems from those two basic concepts. This all being the inspiration and motivation for these tables and the designs that are delicately touching the wood surface.

Stenciling Saturday

This table stenciling that has been a 3, going on 4, month process is finally getting installed. These photos are from this past Saturday's obsessive workday, while still not finishing. I can't help but post the progress on this project. Hopefully all will be set and complete by end of this week, fingers crossed, motivation bursting through my seams. Artist Statement/Bio

I am an aspiring artist, a thinker, an observer, a designer, a photographer, a dreamer, a student, a vegetarian, a sister, a friend, and a daughter. This short list is taken from a much longer list to introduce, in brief, what makes me Who I Am. I, hopefully, will be so lucky as to achieve, through the pure nature of perception, my place in this over weighted society of identities and materialism.
Artist and former mentor, CJ Hurley, once said, “Artwork should reflect ones original idea of a gesamtkunstwerk.” I take this with me today as my motivation and inspiration for not only the artwork that I produce, but how I analyze the world in which I observe and take part in everyday. The word, gesamtkunstwerk [guh۔zahmt۔koonst۔verk], comes from the German language that holds meaning as a complete work of art. As I apply this to my work it means that, with each piece I create it will accumulate and hold meaning, personality and originality of Who I Am. I am constantly being intrigued by what I am exposed to in the environment around me, I then use my perceptions as inspiration for my artwork. When I create a piece of art it means that I have produced something visually enticing that has come from my inner being and is expressed through a source of medium. My work is my voice, it speaks from my soul and displays my thoughts. I don’t always know what my exact idea is, or what the final product will look like, but that is part of why art has encapsulated me.
I analyze everything around me, whether I immediately recognize it or not. I can’t help but wonder what our society would be without need and desire. That alone is reason enough for me to want to understand what and who I am, ultimately separating myself from society stereotypes. I am disturbed with the idea of being compared with, or put in one of the categories society has been made to define the people we are. I believe everyone possesses their own unique soul; however, there are these unfortunate stereotypes that are now engrained in the minds of popular society. My attempt to find identity and reason is through my art.
My aesthetic is motivated and inspired by natural beauty, simplicity and the odd/unique. I express natural beauty through the lens of my Nikon D40 camera. My eye is attracted to the unexpected that a passerby might neglect to notice, or the potential shot that just needs a few minutes to become the perfect angle or light. I find something so calming and peaceful with the act of photography and having the ability to encapsulate a moment that will be unique to only that time of day, that source of light and that angle.
Photography fills part of my creative urges, but I am also an artist who experiences zen in the act of creating digital art or graphic designs. With these, I revert to simplicity and visual appeal. I incorporate inspiration and original thought with attention to detail. Also, for me, drawing invokes similar pleasure as creating digital art; it generates the same kind of mood and relaxation that graphic design does. It does not allow my mind to rest as I am constantly being rejuvenated with inspiration and motivation in the act of creating. Most of the art I create and why I create it is hard to put into words; it speaks its finest when it can be shown through the finished product. Creating is a way that I find my center; it is what I can always rely on in this ever inconsistent world.
So much of my inspiration comes from observing and studying past and present artists. I believe that educating oneself is just as valuable and important as creating original work.
I yearn to continue learning and growing as an artist as I venture into the world. As a young artist, I relish in the opportunity to experiment and develop in pursuit of something that I actually believe in. Art aids the identity of Who I Am, speaks the voice that I can not and inflicts peace and harmony into my soul.

Graffiti Italiana

My weekend consisted of locking myself in my apartment and finishing this recreation of a graffiti photog that I took while in Italy this summer. I used paper for the background foundation and digital illustration for absolutely EVERYTHING else. As simple as the original graffiti might have been on this wall in Venice, it was not that case re-creating it with digital design methods. I saw day light probably 2 times in the past 48 hours, some would say that it obsessive art-making, I say where did my weekend go? The time pasted in a blink (literally) I have this to thank and appreciate now.

Lets just hope for the sake of my professor that my critique goes well, it is not very often that I will hold up to not see the public for a few days straight.

Comic Nonsense

The concept was to re-create a comic/graphic novel's original purpose into something making "no sense" by illustrating it (a.k.a. redrawing it). Naturally, my choice was a novel that would make a point no matter if the information was there or not.. So this particular redrawing was stemmed from the graphic novel of Jane Eyre. This scene is near the end of the novel, where the lines between faithfulness and the nature of love are paralleled. I then recreated the original scene, eliminating the man from it, and putting this beautiful woman in a extremely dominating and, somewhat, sad scene. The significance of the scene without the man present is unbalanced, which is the struggle in the book with the story of love and male roles in those times...

Not saying too much about my concept, I think that without knowing the story & my intent to design this with a concept, there is so much to be observed and thought about from different perspectives. There are women's roles, male dominance, weakness, dependance and overall awareness in this sad portrait of a woman looking to yearn for someone that is no longer there...

Can I be on a meadow, picking flowers, and laying in the sunshine? EH no.. As I near the end of my academic years (aka two more terms left)... I feel the need to find reasons to extend my journey. I do this only when I think about what come after this all ends? The problem is that I don't want to know, its not that I don't know and I'm scared, no. I can not image a life that doesn't involve going to classes. Maybe it is because it a=has literally been the center of my life for the past 16 years, or maybe because I don't know a life without education. The irony in this is that I am trying effortlessly to graduate earlier than my fellow classmates, thinking that it will get me a head start into real life, real life that I am consciously coming to face as something that I am yet ready for.
There is more to this post than my dragging on sorrows of how I really don't know what to do with my life. I know one thing. I don't even want to stop making art. I cannot image my life without a lens to shot a photo, or without a pencil to draw a face, or without a computer to construct whatever illustration captivates my inspiration. I am fairly certain that this will HONESTLY be the one thing in my life that remains a constant theme in my attention.
Being able to have complete freedom within the realm of art is satisfying and brings me peace. In this world, society, community, in humanity in general, it is difficult to find peace, to find calm, and to find acceptance. Realizing that nonw of this matters in finding peace and happiness to me is my saving grace.

I know that it is extremely bad to stare but the other day, when I was trying despretely to relieve the stress that was taking over my life (at the time) I went for a little R and R photog taking. There is nothing more calming and harmonious that connecting with the beauty in nature. I took a long, square shaped, walk around this beautiful city and just let my eye and lens lead the way with no other straying thoughts beyond the ones that I developed along my journey.
In a few words, it was the perfect way for my mind and body to release from the chaotic mess that was going on in my head and just take in instead of letting out. Here is a photo that I believe to capture everything from my emotion before leaving (blurring and unfocused) to the emotion that I resumed with (harmonious with a little uncertainty.)

on my webspace i have created this animation in flash for, what was, my final project in a class this term. It encompasses multiple fascists of media and I worked in a program, Flash, that I want to keep learning and developing in. So, with that said and known this is a very beginning level example of what Flash can do, but still... it involves a ton of coding and processing. It can create quite a headache... ehhh love it none the less

Objective: create a dreamlike character that embodies who I am in a surreal-like environment. I took my beginning stages through until the final products inspiration from the admired artist, Murakami, as he creates dreamlike/creepy characters that serve cirtually no real purpose other than to be shown in galleries featured for viewer observation. As is mine, I have created this character that doesn't serve any purpose other than to embody something that wishes it was there.

Coffee talk....

I am sitting in my dim lighted kitchen on this fresh Wednesday morning enjoying yet another morning coffee. It has become a ritual for me to sit and enjoy a delicious brew every morning for, now, the past 3 years... It is the time of day that all I can focus on is the pure aroma that the coffee just fills throughout the area of my apartment. It is the time of day that I can be completely alone, to only have the thought of what happens when I finish my cup and move on with my day. The best part about my morning glory is that it is always freshly brewed to just the way I desire.
This morning, however, my peaceful thoughts were interrupted with a sense of worry. It was something that I had never thought before and I wonder if my life could be the same after thinking it. This enlightenment was, "What would my world be without coffee." It is something so simple that I just have come to expect there every morning, to rely on, to wake up to and enjoy as, sometimes, my motivation to getting out of the comfort of my bed. I have come to except that it is something that is essential to my life. Therefore, it has naturally been a thing that I have managed to start taking for granted. However, after this ghastly thought of there being no coffee it fulfill my mornings, has made me have a new sense of appreciation and value for the little things that make my life that much better. I image that my day will continue on this very same thought-path, making me walk through and realize all of those things that I take for granted on a daily basis that make my life so much simpler and more enjoyable. Coffee is something that I consider precious. It is my rock, my morning soul and my rejuvenation... I am so joyful for my coffee.

As I am a new comer to this social networking tool I was attempting to manifest this brilliant idea that would be the foundation of my first publish, with the ultimate objective being to demonstrate a "typical" blog. I envisioned ways that I could writing about some crazy encounter this morning while walking to class, or by gossiping about the latest in local news that would arouse a debacle with whomever will end up reading this... however the fact of the matter is that I enjoyed my walk to class today, nothing out of the ordinary sprung out and as for the news, well nothing is shocking there- plus isn’t there enough talk and morning over the current situation.

I have now dedicated this first publish to the official introduction of my long to be relationship with the world wide social networking realm. This blog I have created with the hopes of being about to express who I am via writing, illustration, photography….to people that will share passionate feedback and incorporate a new direction into my vision of what the world is. I thieve to make a point, to be right and to argue when necessary. I argue for that which I find emotionally simulating or sometimes I argue to find the reason I should sway my thoughts in the opposing directions and away from my original.

I am an extremely complex person, who over thinks just about everything that crosses my path and can spend a disgusting amount of minutes standing in front of the counter trying to decide what kind of coffee to buy. However this is ok because I just so happen to live in a very multie faceted world that takes pleasure in trying to push you in a thousand different directions. I find that this is the thrill of the ride and what would be the fun in life if there wasn’t anything to fight or to figure out?

I express myself through writing, photography, fashion. A lot of the times I do the best at defining myself without speaking a single word. Media and design are huge influences to what motivates my creative thoughts and inspires me to figure out who I am.
